As life expectancy rises, so too will the number of people expected to need to grant a third party power over their affairs.

The government has been promoting LPAs and in April 2017 reduced the application fee from £110 to £82.

What do LPAs do?

LPAs grant an individual legal authority to represent or act on another’s behalf in the case of loss of mental capacity, and must be set up before that occurs. Once you have lost capacity it is too late and only a Court of Protection Deputyship is possible.

Deciding to take out an LPA is a very important decision. So it’s important to know that there’s plenty of help and guidance available, from how to choose someone you trust (the most important step), to setting out how you want your affairs to be taken care of.
